DESCRIPTION
The basics of trauma are the same, and yet working with Veterans and Active Military can be very different than working with other populations. In this course, Natural Lifemanship trainers Shannon Knapp, Founder of Horse Sense of the Carolinas, and Cindy Skelton-Hodge, Founder of Windows To My Soul, share the journey and development of their different military programs.

They discuss the many different types of Military programs and explore the benefits and distinctions of TI-EAL and TF-EAP offerings. With NL principals as the guide, they discuss individual session flow and group development strategies. Participants learn the importance of program cultural expertise, and where and how to develop that expertise. Finally, they examine the nuances and art of outreach, community development, and community support.

The goal of this course is to provide participants with the information that allows them to determine their ability and qualifications to provide an effective military program, along with tools and guidance to bridge the gaps.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Identify types of programs possible for working with veterans and particular uses of each
  • Articulate strategies for connecting with the Veteran community
  • Identify testing instruments for working with PTSD for use with your client

2. Working with First Responders, COVID-19, and Social Justice: Is This Right for Me?

PRESENTERS
Jill Gustafson and Cindy Skelton-Hodge

DESCRIPTION
Working with the First Responder Community has always required a unique skillset. In a time
of Covid-19, the racial equality movement and all that this means to our nation, states and
communities, the need to hone that skillset and better understand our own personal beliefs
and concerns becomes paramount. During this course, we look at:
  • Cultural competency and the importance of understanding the different agencies
  • Counter transference; How are we addressing it? How is it impacting our treatment?
  • Applying the Natural Lifemanship process to the issues facing our First Responders
  • Understanding the increased levels of anxiety in the First Responder community and
    regulation tools that can help
  • The role of Retreats in healing First Responder trauma

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • How to start building your First Responder cultural competency
  • Understanding your own counter transference and finding resources to help manage it
  • Is working with First Responders the right choice for you. Are you ready to hold the
  • space that allows their stories to unfold?
